Education FAQs
Individuals MUST register for classes via registration form OR online at: www.bialouisville.com. Completed forms can be mailed to the BIA Office, 1000 N Hurstbourne Pkwy, Louisville 40223.
BIA is closed the following holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Day after Thanksgiving
- Christmas Eve (partial day)
- Christmas Day
Classes are typically between 1-6 hours and held on a single day. Thus, classes do not overlap with holidays. Classes are listed at www.BIAlouisville.com.
All students are welcome (members & non-members), including the public. There are no entrance requirements beyond payment. Some class sizes may be limited to due to room capacity/instructor discretion.
Students MUST notify BIA at (502) 429-6000 or email membership@bialouisville.com.
Courses may be cancelled/rescheduled by providing written notice 24 hours prior to the course.
A no call no show will not receive a refund or credit.
Students who are 10 minutes late, will not be permitted to take the class and will not be refunded.
Generally, each class is $40/credit hour per student for members in good standing and $80/credit hour per student for non-members. However, some specialty classes (Dual Credit) or requiring a certified instructor or material usage may cost more.
Any specialty class prices are indicated on the course description and enrollment price.
All courses are to be paid in full at the time of registration.
Registrations for in-person courses may be cancelled/rescheduled by providing written notice 24 hours prior to the course. A $10 cancellation fee applies.
A $15 cancellation/reschedule fee applies if cancelled on the day of class.
A no call no show will not receive a refund or credit.
Payment is transferable - limited to two times per person or per company. Transferable payments must be used within the calendar year.

· If the class cannot be re-scheduled or you cannot attend the rescheduled date and time, you can transfer your payment to another class.
You MUST attend a class in its entirety to receive credit.
NO ONE will be allowed to sign-in for a class if more than 10 minutes late. This rule will be strictly enforced!
Certificates are emailed to the registrant's email. Make sure the email is correct.
All classes on schedule apply to Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville (BIA) credits. Not all classes apply to the Metro Construction Review (MCR) required credits.
Metro requires that builders and remodelers upload their own continuing education certificates to Louisville Metro’s Business Portal. Instructions are available upon request.
Education courses must come from the BIA curriculum. The Education Chairman may, however, preapprove alternative courses where applicable. The fee for having outside courses approved will be $20/hour. Please call the BIA office at (502) 429-600 to discuss having outside classes approved.
All Classes are located at the BIA Office Building at 1000 N. Hurstbourne Parkway unless otherwise noted. THE BIA LOWER LEVEL IS NOT HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE.
Registrants will be notified if any classes warrant off-site meeting rooms and location change.
Some classes do require textbooks or other class materials. This is the student’s expense. Please refer to class registration – some class materials will be emailed.
Extended cell phone use out of the class could result in loss of credit.
Attendance and participation is sufficient to pass most classes. Some specialty certification classes may require testing.
All Associate Builder/Remodeler members must obtain 80 hours of appropriate professional education credits within four (4) years of becoming an Associate Builder/Remodeler. A minimum of one-fourth (1/4) of the education credits must be met at the end of each year in order to maintain status as an Associate Builder/Remodeler. Education credits must be obtained from BIA education classes. The Education Chairman may, however, preapprove alternative courses where applicable. The fee for having outside courses approved will be $20/hour. Also, new Registered Builder members must attend the BIA new member orientation and one of local code training courses as provided by the Education Committee. Both mandatory sessions must be completed within first year of membership. Associate Builder/Remodelers who fail to complete their required continuing education courses within the time frame set forth above are subject to disciplinary action by the Registered Builder Committee, up to and including termination of membership.
Registered Builders & Remodelers approved after January 1, 1996, must obtain six (6) credit hours per calendar year of continuing education. The credit hour requirement begins the January of the year following the Builder’s approval. Education courses must come from the BIA curriculum. The Education Chairman may, however, preapprove alternative courses where applicable. The fee for having outside courses approved will be $20/hour. Also, new Registered Builders & Remodeler members must attend the BIA new member orientation and one of local code training courses as provided by the Education Committee. Both mandatory sessions must be completed within first year of membership. Registered Builders & Remodelers who teach continuing education classes will receive credit on a two (2) for one (1) basis for the number of hours they teach.

For BIA members seeking to complete BIA requirements, education courses must come from the BIA curriculum. The Education Chairman may, however, preapprove alternative courses where applicable. The fee for having outside courses approved will be $20/hour.
BIA will accept BIA credits towards education requirements that were issued to the builder/remodeler before they became a member.
For non-members, there are no pre-requisite requirements or need for association preapproval.
Pursuant to KRS 165A.450 All licensed schools, resident and nonresident, shall be required to contribute to a student protection fund. The fund shall be used to reimburse eligible Kentucky students, to pay off debts, including refunds to students enrolled or on leave of absence by not being enrolled for one (1) academic year or less from the school at the time of the closing, incurred due to the closing of a school, discontinuance of a program, loss of license, or loss of accreditation by a school or program.
To file a claim against the Kentucky Student Protection Fund, each person filing must submit a signed and completed Form for Claims Against the Student Protection Fund, Form PE-38 and provide the requested information to the following address:

Students enrolled in online programs who have complaints, grievances, or concerns regarding courses taken at the Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville (BIA) should first seek to resolve their complaints through informal discussion and administrative channels. This is the same process for all students enrolled BIA.
Complaint Process for Current Residents of Kentucky: The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (KCPE) is the agency in Kentucky that handles complaints about the Sullivan University and has the ability to act on those complaints from students residing in Kentucky. Students should attempt to resolve the complaint through the established protocol at BIA before contacting KCPE.
To file a complaint with the Kentucky Commission on Proprietary Education, a complaint shall be in writing and shall be filed on Form PE-24, Form to File a Complaint, accompanied, if applicable, by Form PE-25, Authorization for Release of Student Records.
